You don't abandon that.

Moiraine certainly returned from the underworld. Also from the land of the Elfin folk. I see parallels from fairy tales - she was Sleeping Beauty in the Tower of Ghenjei. And Thom's rescue of her was like Orpheus in the Underworld, playing music to save the trio from the *Finns and also to help Mat remember.

Also a parallel in Finnish mythology, where Mat the trickster is like Lemminkainen, who journeys to Tuonela, the land of the dead, to shoot the Swan of Tuonela and claim the daughter of Louhi, mistress of the Northland, in marriage. This is a combination of marrying Tuon and rescuing Moiraine.

Of course, Mat sacrificing his eye for her, and the knowledge she has or represents, is like Odin sacrificing his eye to gain wisdom.

This is just the bare bones. My Mat essay goes into these in more detail.Lindahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14767984732078916662noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4833204375789249557.post-56558918212513672262012-02-11T23:33:47.742-05:002012-02-11T23:33:47.742-05:00Interesting notion, Linda. We mustn't forget though that by the end of Towers, Moiraine has Tom as her warder and of course Rand will have Min, Elaine AND Aviendha guarding his back, so things could get down right crowded in the saving someone's ashes department.

Linda? Do you have any speculation/s that you'd be willing to empart here, as to Lan's likely story arc?

I reckon their will be some interesting reactions on the part of Lan, Rand et. al. to Moiraine's return from the underworld. (if such we can label it) Forgive me if I'm asking you to repeat another post but is there a parallel in Greek, Norse, Druidian or some other mythology to Moiraine's story arc thus far?

Thanks!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4833204375789249557.post-64263571927772775922012-02-10T21:02:32.173-05:002012-02-10T21:02:32.173-05:00Thanks, I'm glad you enjoy it so much.

When Rand was very dark in TGS, he said he was going to use Lan as one, and it was obviously an Evil Thing to contemplate, and probably not what will happen.

Though if we look at the ending of TEOTW, which I believe AMOL will link up with, Lan was torn between protecting Nynaeve and Moiraine at the Eye, so he may suffer something similar again. Conversely one or both of those women may be torn between saving Lan and helping Rand.Lindahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14767984732078916662noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4833204375789249557.post-55543901564339331402012-02-05T13:13:00.194-05:002012-02-05T13:13:00.194-05:00Linda, Again I bow before your knowledge of WoT. ...Linda, Again I bow before your knowledge of WoT. I don't doubt your scholarship for a minute but I AM amazed that such a central character to the entire arc of WoT has gotten to the penultimate book before he gets a POV! Amazed that I haven't felt the lack, as much as anything else. RJ and now BS have managed to let us in on Lan's character mostly thru dialogue between him and Rand and certainly w/Moiraine in the early books but also having everyone muse about this brooding, lethal icon of moral rectitude. Clearly it was/is a choice on the part of our authors but I have to wonder, since it was, just what that portends for AMoL. One of the first rules of playwriting -bear with me here- is that you don't place a rifle on the wall of the set, unless you're going to use it before the closing curtain. Similarly, while Lan has certainly played an important, nay pivotal role to date, it has always been in support and reactive. Mayhap, he will emerge as much more than cannon fodder to divert the DO from Rand's true intentions? Well, it's mere months now until the answer/s will be revealed.

Thank you Linda, for a blog that I check without fail every day.

Thanks!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
