There are actually quite a few characters in The Wheel of Time who we can conclusively identify as NOT being Darkfriends, due to their thoughts about the Shadow/Dark One/Forsaken/ their motivations, etc., or being members of groups known to contain no Darkfriends. Rand, Mat, Perrin, Elayne, Egwene, Nynaeve, and Min have all shown by points of view too numerous to note, and their actions, that they are on the side of good. The Heroes of the Horn are also obviously in the same boat and are listed in the Horn of Valere article.
According to Jordan in his notes on the Kin, there are no Darkfriends in the Kin and never have been. Due to their desire to avoid notice, they have always vetted any possible recruit very thoroughly and pass over any women who may be unsuitable or not accept the rules or whose behaviour may attract unwanted attention. All Aes Sedai, including the Black Ajah, saw the Kin as useless. So disregarded were they, that the FOrskaen were not even told about them. Therefore all known Kin have been included in this list. For everyone else a quote or an explanation is given, in alphabetical order.
Abell Cauthon
Abell Cauthon led troops in the Last Battle and in the Two Rivers, and supported Tam al’Thor.
Adelorna Bastine
According to Alviarin, no Tower Ajah Head was Black Ajah, apart from Galina Casban.

- The Path of Daggers, An Unwelcome Return
Member of the expedition to the Black Tower so obviously doomed that Alviarin decided no Black sisters would go on it. However, her Asha’man has been turned to the Shadow (see The Shadow's Influence on the Black Tower) so she may have been also.
Aiden
[Alviarin] considered drawing Zemaile to some secluded corner where she could be questioned and disposed of, but then she noticed another Brown, a round woman even darker than Zemaile, watching them from farther down the hall. Aiden and Zemaile were weak in the Power, yet overcoming both at once would be difficult if it was possible at all...'Alviarin knows who all the Black Ajah are so she wouldn't need to kill a Black sister for information, let alone take the risk of killing two.

"But she would still see that no Black sisters went with Toveine."The sisters in this group named so far are Toveine Gazal (Red, bonded by Logain), Jenare (Red, bonded to Welyn Kajima), Lemai (Red), Akoure (Grey), Desandre (Yellow), Ayako (White, bonded by Donalo Sandomere), Gabrelle (Brown, bonded by Logain), Carniele (Yellow), Adrielle (Gray, bonded by Mezar Kurin), Aisling Noon (Green, bonded by Arel Malevin) and Nelavaire Demasiellin (possibly) (Green, bonded by Naeff).

It can be assumed that all the Asha’man who have bonded Aes Sedai are not Darkfriends either, since the bonding was done without Taim’s approval or permission and since then likely Darkfriend Asha’man are raised as quickly as possible to full Asha’man who are exempted from being bonded.
They are also listed individually in this article since they have been separated and some have been Turned to the Shadow.

Although there isn't any PoV of him, it's clear that Elyas can't be a Darkfriend. If he were, the wolves would know it and certainly not follow him. Wolves can read the minds of people eg when Perrin tells his faked story to Elyas in The Eye of the World.

Whitecloaks? What would Children of the Light want with Mara? He would never believe she was a Darkfriend. Gawyn
He wished he could have killed al’Thor. For his mother, dead by the man’s doing; Egwene denied it, but she had no proof…He was a fool. He should have killed al’Thor; he had to kill him. But he could not. Not because the man was the Dragon Reborn, but because he had promised Egwene not to raise a hand against al’Thor.Darkfriends all have orders one way or the other about killing Rand, or not; Gawyn’s thoughts show he doesn’t, and his feelings concerning Rand are clearly personal.

Great work! Leane Sharif could also be added - Egwene sees her with the rebels when they offer their apology to the Tower. She must have proved herself on the oath rod before the rebel Hall, or she would be absent.
One small problem with this: virtually all followers of the Dark One consider themselves Darkfriends. The exception: the Chosen see themselves as higher beings, and "Darkfriends" are one and all below them. The fact that someone has resworn the Oath not to lie, and has named herself as "not a Darkfriend" is insufficient proof that she is not Mesaana.
Therefore it is possible that one single entry in this list is mistaken.
On the other hand, Brandon said he doubted a Forsaken would be able to swear under the first oath that she is not a darkfriend.
It suggests that's not how Mesaana defeated the trial by the binder, if she is portraying a sister (Brandon simply confirmed she is in the Tower).
Brandon also said that Egwene's reasoning isn't incorrect, and part of Egwene's reasoning is that Mesaana could not pull off playing a well-known sister/one who socializes, which seems to rule out some of the favourite suspects, like Norine (prominent enough that she thought she should have been Elaida's Keeper instead of Alviarin).
It sounds more and more likely Mesaana is (or at least has been) the young friendless Brown Danelle.
If the sister she's played is still alive, she could have compelled her to go swear the oaths. If not, she could place an inverted MoM and strength disguising weave on any sister she compelled and captured and have her play Danelle for the swearing, before killing her.
An easier but more dangerous way to defeat the Oath Rod would be to have spotted a new obscure/young sister, let her swear the oath then capture and kill her and take her place.
A simpler solution would be to let her disguise pass for captured or BA while she replaces a novice or an invented servant from now on. A great deal depends on what Mesaana wants to achieve by remaining in the Tower, and what resources she has at her disposal. Was the BA all she had to spy? Etc.
She's not likely to be anyone listed above - in any case, those characters are not Darkfriends, even if they've been replaced later by Mesaana.
Leane was led out of her prison in the Tower when the rebels arrived in Tar Valon and assembled int he square. She had no chance to swear anything at that stage. She would have sworn later, when the Tower Aes Sedai swore.
The Aes Sedai on this list were either among the rebels or out of the Tower, or they were hunting the Black Ajah, or named as Ajah Heads who were not Black. Or they raised Egwene in the White Tower. I don't think that Mesaana would do any of those things.
I don't think we have enough proof of Teslyn. The way she stambles swearing to Mat may be because it conflicts with the Oath to the Dark One.
Skeeve: If Teslyn were Black, she could swear any oath with impunity because she can lie and doesn't have to mean to keep any oath she makes. Galina is an example of this.
Personally I would really have to see Brandon's exact quote on the matter before I'm convinced. Having spent some time with him, I'm quite aware of how Aes Sedai-like he can be when he wants to be, so hearing what he said second hand about anything doesn't really work for me. It's no offense to you - I just know he likes to be slippery.
Linda is right about when Leane would have had to re-swear, but regardless, she now has proven herself if she swore when the WT Aes Sedai did.
She should be on the list. I hardly think Egwene would have let her get away without swearing after the Sheriam incident.
And when she appears in the next book, I'll add her to the list, along with others who are in the same situation. Right now, she is not proven. There's enough disputation going over people who have definitely sworn!
Not sure if Faile qualifys as 'Not a Darkfriend' just cause she is trying not to think about the DO. Just cause she serves the Great Lord doesn't mean she isn't terrified.
I found a better quote for Faile today and substituted it.
One possible flaw in your logic is that anyone thinking another person is a darkfriend means they are not. I think that a darkfriend could easily wonder if 'those people over there' are darkfriends, simply because he/she doesn't know them. I could very well be wrong, just something I thought of while reading this :)
One thing I've considered about the Aes Sedai who have resworn the oaths ... haven't some of them simply said: "I am not Black Ajah"?
While I'm sure the Forsaken would consider themselves darkfriends, I don't think Mesaana would consider herself Black Ajah. Wouldn't that be a very possible loop-hole?
That's true and has been pointed out by others on various fora including myself.
However it's a very risky way to do it. Much safer for Mesaana to get a proxy to substitute for her, or for Mesaana to use illusion to pretend to hold the rod or pretend to touch it with spirit, etc.
And if the Aes Sedai are re-swearing all three oaths? No Forsaken would want to be bound by them at all. It is most likely that Mesaana substituted another in some way.
It doesn't terribly much matter if Mesaana swears an Oath she does not want to. All she need do is unswear it that same night - I have little doubt as to her ability to get her hands on the Oath Rod.
And honestly, the fate she's suffered from the Dark One himself, for her failure, is much more painful than forswearing Oaths on the Rod. That sort of pain would be meaningless to her, I should think.
I suppose you could add Corele and Nesune (and poor Daigian of course, but she's dead anyuway). Also the whole of Samitsu's POV in the CoT Prologue seems to show she hasn't chosen wrong allegiance.
Probably they aren't Darkfriends but any of Corele, Nesune or Daigian might be. The choice of who lived and who died was only whether they had a Warder or not. Darkfriends sometimes are killed because they are in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Samitsu also probably isn't - but she was mostly thinking about Cadsuane, power struggles and Healing. She did say the bubble of evil in Cairhien was due to the Shadow but even a Darkfriend might say that.
The entry on Rodel Ituralde has a cut-and-paste issue.
Also, the "She was able to look at Rand ..." probably applies to Siuan.
What about entries on mid-major characters like Birgitte, Loial and Berelain?
I fixed Rodel Ituralde. Siuan's entry is fine as it stands. Most Aes Sedai have this style entry.
Birgitte and Loial could almost be in the disclaimer up the top, but I have pointed out their actions alone make them qualify.
There is no proof at all for Berelain.
Hi Linda, I think that you can add to the no-darkfriend list also Myrelle: when Nynaeve went to her to take the bond of Lan, Nynaeve has a tought about the black sisters that were in the Verin's list among the rebels and that went to the Black Tower, she affirms that all of them escaped before the first message about the purge arrived to them from Egwene
Cesare: The Darkfriends they knew of among the rebel expedition fled, but it's still not certain that no secret ones remain.
Mind you, I don't think Myrelle is a Darkfriend.
Great work as always Linda.
It's late, so I may have missed her, but For(Tuon)a isn't on the list?
Not yet, no. Due to lack of a conclusive quote. (She isn't a Darkfriend of course).
I think all Kinswomen can be added to the list, at least according to Elayne's reasoning. Elayne surmised, while trying to find the murderer of Adeleas and Ispan, that the Kin was free of Darkfriends since Ispan hadn't been aware of the Kin's true nature, implying a lack of insider moles. (Of course, this reasoning could be faulty if the ignorance was Ispan's own.)
Cabriana Mercandes: I don't think her not recognising Semirhage is proof since Darkfriends are often unaware of the true identity or appearance of the Forsaken who contact them. The proof is simply that Cabriana was tortured for information and killed rather than ordered to take Arangar/ Halima along.
Along the same lines, we can safely add to the list the late Adeleas, Vandene, Sareitha, Anaiya and her Warder, Kairen and others killed by Darkfriends or Forsaken either for fear of exposure or for not being fellow Darkfriends and thus of any value.
Cadsuane: there's another excellent proof - Cadsuane considers her failure to root out the Black Ajah as one of the greatest failures of her career.
Loial: Are *any* Ogier capable of siding with the Shadow at all? Seems unlikely.
Eamon Valda: the proof isn't conclusive - the statement is too ambiguous; he could mean the Shadow 'settling everywhere' as a positive thing. I suspect he might be a Darkfriend.
For(Tuon)a: there may not be quotes but there's circumstantial evidence that she isn't a Darkfriend:
1) she is repelled by darkness in Rand, and her instinct is to reject all his offers/ demands outright. The Shadow holds no attraction for her.
2) Semirhage wanted Tuon killed and replaced on the throne by the known Darkfriend Suroth. There would have been no need to kill Tuon had she been a Darkfriend herself. By the same token, Empress Radhanan and the rest of the Imperial family murdered by Semirhage weren't Darkfriends, either.
I think it's pretty safe to say that all the Suldam who vomited or had similar reactions on learning that Anath was really Semirhage aren't Darkfriends.
Sevanna: for all her faults, I don't think she's a Darkfriend, otherwise Demandred and Mesaana wouldn't have needed to trick her but would have given her direct orders.
I also wonder about the Two Rivers folk: there hasn't been any suggestion of native Darkfriends in the series so far (Padan Fain is an outsider). Could the Two Rivers be Darkfriend-free?
Most comprehensive list. I was surprised by how mercilessly you have made this list - for instance, I chuckled when it came to names like Moiraine or Siuan, since they in my view are personifications of champions for the Light. I'm quite sure you would agree with me, I'm just stating that your judgement borders that of, hmm, Aisha Raveneos, perhaps?
Thanks for a great article.
Hey there Linda, thanks for this great article. I think I've spotted two minor errors: Kateri Nepvue was murdered in ToM/5 and can therefore not have battled the Black Ajah in ToM/38. The same goes for Nimri, who is mentioned only once, and that's in ToM/23. Apart from that, no complaints. Great job.
Thanks, those look to be copy paste errors. I'll correct them during my update.
Thanks for this great entry, Linda. Minor error: Nelavaire is listed as part of the Black Tower expedition, but she was actually part of the Tower Embassy and captured at Dumai's Wells.
Great work!
Several Aes Sedai sworn to Rand can be added - they fought on the side of the Light, at Thakan'dar- Rafela Cindal, Bera Harkin, Nesune Bihara, Beldeine Nyram, Sarene Nemdahl, Sashalle Anderly.
Aviendha mentions Rafela joining the last stand of the Dragonsworn, leaving her with nobody to link with.
Bera healed Aviendha, and Aviendha had her lead a circle.
Nesune commented on Graendal's strength.
Beldeine died alongside Karldin.
And Graendal Compelled and captured Sarene and Sashalle.
Great work, Linda.
I know these characters are only mentioned in the Companion, but they might be worth adding - the four remaining Ferrets.
